Great Britain Ireland Win First Curtis Cup Since 2016 In Dramatic Finish

Great Britain & Ireland Win Curtis Cup

Thriller at Conwy

Team GB&I produce magnificent comeback to beat USA 13-11

Emotions ran high as Great Britain and Ireland staged a dramatic comeback to win the Curtis Cup at Conwy Golf Club on Sunday, their first victory since 2016.

GB&I trailed 8-4 after the first two days of the biennial match, but rallied to win nine of the 12 singles matches on the final day. The final match of the day saw Annabel Fuller defeat Rachel Kuehn 2&1 to clinch a famous victory.

Sensational fightback

The GB&I team showed great resilience and determination to come back from their first-day deficit. They won the first two singles matches of the day and then shared the next three to make the overall score 8-7.

After a short break, the GB&I team won the next three matches to take a 10-9 lead. The USA evened the score at 11-all with two matches to play, but Fuller and Caley McGinty won their matches to secure the victory for GB&I.

“We showed a lot of heart,” said GB&I captain Elaine Ratcliffe. “We never gave up and we kept fighting until the very end.”

Drama on the 18th

The 18th green was packed with spectators as Fuller and Kuehn played the final hole. Fuller hit a great drive down the middle of the fairway, while Kuehn found the rough.

Fuller hit a superb approach shot to within 10 feet of the pin, while Kuehn's third shot found a bunker. Kuehn was unable to get up and down from the bunker, and Fuller holed her putt to win the match and the Curtis Cup for GB&I.

Landmark victory

GB&I’s victory is their first since 2016, when they also won the Curtis Cup at Conwy.

It is also the first time that GB&I have won the Curtis Cup on home soil since 1996.

Epic triumph

GB&I’s victory is a testament to the strength and depth of their team.

They showed great heart and resilience to come back from their first-day deficit and win the Curtis Cup in dramatic fashion.
