Shelley Duvall, Star of 'The Shining' and Altman Films, Dies at 71
Big-Eyed Actress Known for Quirky Roles
Shelley Duvall, the big-eyed, waifish performer who won the Cannes actress award for Robert Altman's 3 Women and endured Stanley Kubrick's relentless abuse during the making of The Shining, has died. She was 71.
Duvall's Last Days in Texas
On a winding back road of Texas Hill Country, Shelley Duvall pulled over and lit another cigarette. "How did you like Egypt?" she called out from the driver's seat of her battered old car.
Duvall, a regular star in some of the defining movies of the 1970s and 1980s, had retreated from the spotlight decades earlier. She had become increasingly reclusive, suffering from mental illness and battling with the demons that had haunted her throughout her career.
