Alejandro Mayorkas Impeachment Vote

House Impeaches Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

Republicans Succeed on Second Attempt

Trial to Begin at 1 PM

The House of Representatives has voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, marking the second successful impeachment of a Biden administration official.

The vote was 214 to 213, with three Republicans voting with Democrats against the measure. Mayorkas faces two articles of impeachment: breach of trust and willful and knowing violation of the law.

The impeachment trial will begin at 1 pm on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. All 100 senators will be sworn in as jurors.

House Republicans first attempted to impeach Mayorkas in November 2022, but the resolution failed to pass. This second attempt was successful after House leadership made changes to the articles of impeachment to address concerns raised by some Republicans.

Mayorkas has been a controversial figure since his appointment in February 2021. Republicans have accused him of mishandling the crisis at the US-Mexico border, where there has been a surge in illegal crossings.

Mayorkas has defended his record, saying that he is working to secure the border while also addressing the humanitarian needs of migrants.

The impeachment trial is expected to last several weeks. It is unclear whether the Senate will vote to convict Mayorkas and remove him from office.
